This is an old Durham Duplex razor made by the Durham Duplex Razor Co of New York. The razor was designed to be a safety type razor that could be used in the same way as a cut throat razor. It did have the advantage of being double sided and so could shave in each direction.

On the blade holder it says that it was patented in the USA in May 28. 07., presumably 1907. This particular razor was probably made a few years later possibly before 1911 as it has ivorine scales (the side pieces), a material meant to imitate ivory that pre-dated bakelite. Although later Durham Duplex razors were made in Sheffield this razor was bought from America which is why it was made by the original manufacturer in New York

The razor is approx 145mm long when folded and approx 215mm when open. It has the comb fitting that slotted over the blade when shaving and also another separate guard type fitting. There is no blade with this razor. The whole set fits inside the original red leather case.

The razor has some damage to one of the sides as can be seen in the photographs, also the case has seen better days, but this razor is probably over 100 years old. The case and razor are as I bought them, they will probably clean up very well but I always leave razors in their 'as found' condition so that the buyer can decide whether or not to clean them.
