Extract from Bakelite book by Cook & Slessor

This Davenset battery cell tester is a classic piece of design in bakelite. Originally made for the mundane task of testing car batteries it is beautifully designed to be easy to use and is also just a lovely item to look at. To me it looks like it has come straight out of a Dan Dare comic.

Made by Partridge Wilson & Co Ltd of Leicester in 1947 this is in immaculate condition and comes in the original box. As these were meant to be used in garages they normally have all the usual signs of rough usage but I think this one has never been used. The box is still in good condition, slight rusting of the staples and a tear to the cardboard insert that holds the tester, probably due to the weight.

The tester is featured in a lot of books on bakelite and early plastics due to the stylish design. The photo I have included is taken from the book 'Bakelite' by Patrick Cook & Catherine Slessor (published by Apple Press).

Overall size of tester is approx 270mm long, 120mm wide and 90mm high.
Although it is most likely still fully working it is sold as a collectors item only.
