Back of cheques, Co-operative Wholesale Society Bankers

These cheques were issued by the Enfield Highway Co-operative Society Ltd, and the bank was the Co-operative Wholesale Society Bank. There are six cheques of each size.

The smaller cheques are marked as the Butchery Department and are stamped by the bank of the recipient as Lloyds Bank, West Smithfield and so were presumably for meat etc. Four cheques are dated 1932 and two are 1935, although this later date is unclear.

The larger cheques do not have a departmental name and again were mostly issued in 1932 although one is 1933. These cheques are payable to a variety of companies including Smith, Corona Typewriters and Pathescope Ltd.

They larger cheques are 215 x 125mm in size and the smaller cheques 185 x 100mm. They are all stamped as being paid. Originally they were all blue but they have faded to varying degrees as can be seen in the photos. There is some marking and damage around the edges but this is not surprising as they have been stored away for about 90 years
