This guide book is based on the area of Wessex in the South of England as depicted in the novels of Thomas Hardy. It describes the area both it was when the book was published and how it featured in the famous novels. Mainly covering Dorset it does venture into the surrounding counties, even as far as Boscastle in Cornwall and Dunster in Somerset.

The guide has 53 descriptive pages which includes photographs of important places and also numerous black and white sketches by Margaret Holman. These sketches do give a more atmospheric impression than the photos.

Included in the guide are 2 maps, one giving an overview of the full extent of the Hardy's Wessex and another showing more detail of 'South Wessex', the area featured most prominantly by Hardy in his novels. At either end of the book are many adverts for the various businesses at the time the book was published.

There is nothing to indicate publication date. It is a second edition and I would guess that it dates from the 1930's

There are 78 pages plus card covers. Size 185 x 125mm. There is some scuffing to the covers and wear at the base of the spine. The main body of the book is in pretty good condition with a tight binding, slight foxing to perimeter of some pages.

Fascinating guide to the area that Thomas Hardy immortalised in his many novels.
