This desk tidy was used in old Post Offices. It was made of Vulcanite (hardened rubber) by Spencer Moulton Ltd of Bradford on Avon and has their details on the underside. There are several compartments for office sundries, paper clips etc, and may have had a rubber pad or blotting paper in the square area.

Spencer Moulton Ltd were a manufacturer of rubber items, from car tyres to tennis balls, and so this hardened rubber desk tidy would have fitted in with their range of products. It has the George V name on the underside together with the dates 1931 and 1930. They did make a range of hardened rubber items for government departments.

Maximum overall size is 305 x 225mm and is 38mm deep.

The desk tidy has been used and so there is some slight chipping to the edges, also there is a stress crack where the shallower tray meets the deeper rear section. As Vulcanite can be quite brittle this is not surprising. The shallow tray section at the front is slightly twisted, again this is not surprising given the thinness of the vulcanite to this section.
